Germany's Loss of Direction
Today, the problems in Germany's foreign policy are creating serious effects not only on the international stage but also in the country's internal economic and social balances. Traditionally, Germany has embraced an approach to foreign policy grounded in diplomacy, flexibility and neutrality. However, this approach has changed markedly in recent years. In particular, the foreign policy pursued under the leadership of Green Party-affiliated Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock does not align with the far-sighted strategic approach and pragmatism in diplomacy foreseen by Bismarck.
GERMANY'S DIPLOMATIC TRADITION IS UNDER THREAT
Germany's tradition of conducting neutral, solution-oriented diplomacy has, in recent times, given way to a sharper, more partisan and ideological approach. One of the most concrete examples of this is the flying of the Ukrainian flag at the German Consulate in Istanbul. Diplomacy requires neutrality and keeping channels of dialogue open. However, such symbolic gestures create the impression that Germany is drifting away from its traditional mediating role and shifting toward a partisan position in international relations. This situation damages both Germany's international credibility and its domestic political balance.
THE RISE OF THE FAR-RIGHT MOVEMENT
This loss of direction in Germany's foreign policy also plays a significant role in the growing economic imbalances and social unrest. The stance taken during the Russia-Ukraine war and the resulting energy crisis have left Germany facing serious economic hardship. Rising cost of living, inequalities in income distribution, and diminishing social welfare have created widespread dissatisfaction across society. This dissatisfaction is creating fertile ground for the rise of far-right movements.
TURKS ARE THE FIRST TARGET
The rise of the far right should be seen not only as an economic and political problem, but also as a social threat. Turkish and other immigrant-origin citizens living in Germany are prime candidates to be the first target of this rise. At the core of far-right movements lie discriminatory policies that target different cultures and immigrant communities. This situation also carries the risk of undermining social cohesion and peace.
THE ELECTION IS A CRITICAL TURNING POINT
At this point, the political participation of Turkish-origin voters and other immigrant groups living in Germany is of great importance. The elections to be held in February are a critical turning point for Germany's future direction. Voters of Turkish origin need to act consciously, stand against the rise of the far right, and actively participate in democratic processes. This is of vital importance not only to protect the rights of immigrant communities, but also to bring balance and stability to Germany's overall political climate.
GERMANY MUST RETURN TO ITS OLD APPROACH IN FOREIGN POLICY
Politics, diplomacy and flexibility are the cornerstones of modern international relations. Diplomacy makes it possible to seek reconciliation and solutions even in dark and uncertain times. But this cannot be achieved by raising a partisan flag high or by taking a fanatical stance. Germany must once again adopt a flexible and neutral approach in foreign policy. Otherwise, it risks losing its stability not only on the international stage, but domestically as well.
SOCIETY NEEDS TO REFLECT ON THIS
In conclusion, the current deadlocks in Germany's foreign policy, and their reflection on internal dynamics, are a situation that needs to be carefully considered not only by political leaders but by all segments of society. It is a great responsibility, particularly for citizens of Turkish origin, to take an active role in this process by demonstrating their commitment to democracy and social peace in the elections. Otherwise, the rise of the far right and the polarization it creates will endanger not only immigrant communities but Germany's future as well.
