There is no such thing as healthy tanning
We are in the hottest days of summer; everywhere, people are making an effort to sunbathe, get more sun exposure, and tan; there are advertisements and promotions for tanning products. In other words, the collective goal is to get a tan...
The damaging effect of excessive sunlight on cells is permanent and has a cumulative, increasing effect; this can lead to serious health problems. Harmful rays from the sun can cause health problems in the skin, eyes, and immune system even in people in their twenties.
In reality, tanning is a response given by our body, a kind of defense mechanism, to stop damage to our cell DNA. Our skin cells work to minimize the damage caused by ultraviolet rays from the sun and to repair the damage that occurs. However, this process may not be sufficient when we are exposed to excessive sunlight.
Since the early 1960s, a significant increase in skin cancer cases has been observed worldwide. Experts attribute this to people spending more time in the sun than in the past and to sun-tanned, bronzed skin being regarded as a sign of beauty and health.
I WISH EVERYONE A MINDFUL HOLIDAY
Another fact revealed by statistics is that, over the past century, the incidence of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, has increased 20-fold compared to the past, and this increase continues. Research has also determined that the incidence of every type of skin cancer is increasing among people in their twenties. Damage to the ozone layer, resulting in a decrease in the atmosphere's protective filtering property and more ultraviolet rays (particularly UV-B) reaching the earth's surface, is another dimension of the problem.
Every person spends a certain portion of their life under the sun. Researchers have shown that nearly 80% of this total time occurs before the age of 18, and that sunburn during childhood increases the incidence of skin cancer later in life. It is also known that, because body cells divide much faster than in adults, people who are still growing are especially more affected by the harm caused by ultraviolet rays. Given all this, I wish everyone a mindful holiday.
