All living creatures need food to sustain their lives. The types and requirements of food seem to differ greatly from creature to creature. However, all foods share common basic components. These components are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The body can produce some of these basic components by using other basic components. However, some cannot be made by the body and must necessarily be obtained ready-made from outside. Most of us do not know how many calories the foods we eat contain, what basic components are in these foods, and in what proportions these components are found in the foods.

To understand what healthy and balanced nutrition means, we first need to become familiar with the basic food sources. Foods consist of four food groups. These food groups are milk and dairy products, meat and meat products, vegetables and fruit, and bread and grains. The prerequisite for healthy and balanced nutrition is to consume a certain proportion from each food group. Everyone must discover healthy and balanced nutrition specific to their own body. Foods are used to provide our body with heat and energy, to enable cell growth and repair, and to regulate various bodily processes.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER CONSUMPTION

People's nutritional needs vary. For this reason, it is necessary to stay away from generic prescriptions. Because people's needs differ due to hereditary factors. For example, there are constitutions that cannot tolerate milk. These people should meet their calcium needs not from milk, but from other sources.

Another important part of healthy and balanced nutrition is water consumption. Water is the component found in the greatest abundance in the body. Especially in the summer months, when heat and humidity are intense, great attention must be paid to water intake. About 40 ml of water per kilogram of body weight should be consumed. As the water we lose through sweating and evaporation increases, water consumption should also be increased. The main tasks of water are to facilitate the digestion of food, transport nutrients to cells, and expel harmful substances produced as a result of metabolism.

Calories: The amount of energy a food contains is measured in calories. People's daily calorie needs vary. It changes according to age, gender, occupation, and weight. The average daily calorie requirement for a middle-aged woman is around 1,500-2,000 calories. If more calories are taken in than this requirement, the excess calories accumulate in the body as fat. Conversely, if not enough calories are taken in to meet daily activities, the body then begins converting its own tissues into calories.

Which foods to avoid: Some foods have such low nutritional value that the substances they contain can cause illness. Foremost among these are foods containing sodium, fat, cholesterol, alcohol, and sugar. Healthy eating does not mean cutting these out entirely, but eating less of them. Among types of fat, saturated fats (butter, margarine, coconut oil, etc., which are solid at room temperature) are the unhealthiest, as they raise cholesterol levels. You can avoid saturated fats in fried foods too by using sunflower oil or other vegetable oils. Sodium found in table salt causes high blood pressure if taken in excess. Sugar, too, despite providing high calories, has very low nutritional value, and we should not forget that sugar also damages our teeth.

ARE WE EATING CORRECTLY

The truth is that 20th-century humans developed an extremely flawed food culture and continue to insist on it. There is a growing number of people who count calories to lose weight quickly, who follow the advice to "eat little but often" and eat ten meals a day, who read daily newspapers and change their diet four times a month, or who consider it a skill to eat foods extremely harmful to the human body merely for the pleasure of taste. The human body is made up of what is taken in through food. Just as the sand, cement, and iron used in the construction of a building determine that building's soundness, the food we use to build our own body determines our health and our emotional and intellectual world.

For example, red meat is an extremely harmful food for the human body. Red meat disrupts the delicate balance of the body's endocrine glands, sooner or later leading to illness. It is a known fact that those who consume red meat are more prone to cardiovascular disease and cancer. What is less known is the effect of meat on people's mood.

People who eat meat become more aggressive. They are emotionally insensitive and coarse. They have difficulty perceiving intellectual nuance. They display a personality prone to materialism and carnal desire. They become anxious, and because they get bored quickly, they try to console themselves with various forms of entertainment; to escape the unexplained (!) distress they experience, they also turn to substances such as alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs.

In other words, those who consume red meat deal a great blow to the physical-emotional-intellectual potential they carry as human beings. For those who say, "I eat it and nothing happens to me!", adopting a meat-free diet and seeing the difference for themselves will be enough to convince them.

In my next article, I will address the topic of "which foods are well tolerated, which foods should be consumed with caution, and the correct techniques for preparing food."
