The task of the immune system is to defend against disease-causing agents. In other words, it recognizes and eliminates diseased changes in the body's cells. These diseased cellular changes are triggered by harmful agents such as viruses, medications, and environmental toxins. If our immune system is constantly overstimulated, it cannot adequately perform its function, and under these conditions, a tumor can develop.

A PROTECTIVE FACTOR

It has been established that an increase in vegetable consumption and a Mediterranean-style diet, thanks to their antioxidant properties, significantly reduce the risk of developing many types of cancer. In general terms, antioxidants are various vitamins, trace elements, and secondary plant-active substances that protect the body against "free radicals." Because of their high reactivity, free radicals can react with all body tissues. They are responsible for cellular changes and, consequently, for triggering cancer.

Secondary Plant Substances: Phytochemicals

The effects of secondary plant substances have been researched more extensively in recent years. As a result, a large number of chemical compounds that can only be obtained from plants have been identified. They protect people from cancer and cardiovascular diseases, have a suppressive effect on inflammation, and strengthen the immune system.

Phytoestrogens

Another group of secondary plant substances with a particularly preventive effect on breast cancer in the human organism is phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are found in soybeans, whole grains, flaxseed, cabbage plants, and dark-colored fruits.

The Cruciferous Vegetable Family

Among the many types of vegetables, cruciferous vegetables stand out in particular. Among their best-known members are various cabbage types such as broccoli, green cabbage, and cauliflower, as well as radish, horseradish, mustard, sea radish, arugula, and watercress. Thanks to the indoles and sulfur compounds they contain, cruciferous vegetables have protective effects. They have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer in animals.

Fiber

Fiber consists of complex carbohydrates that are not broken down in our body... Regular and adequate intake of fiber protects people not only from constipation but also from breast cancer. Estrogens in the intestines bind to fiber and are excreted along with it. This prevents estrogen from being reabsorbed from the intestinal cavity and, consequently, from returning to the liver via the bloodstream. In this way, it lowers the level of biologically active estrogen in the blood.
