Fatty liver is often thought to result from increased alcohol consumption. However, numerous other causes can also be identified:

  • Chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease
  • Disorders of fat metabolism
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Excess weight or obesity (fattening)

How is fatty liver noticed?

Fatty liver can develop unnoticed. If the organ enlarges and becomes heavier, the following complaints can appear:

  • A feeling of pressure and fullness in the liver area
  • Fatigue
  • A feeling of weakness
  • Rarely, pain in the upper right abdominal area

Nutrition in Fatty Liver

Fatty liver has different forms. A distinction is made between non-alcoholic fatty liver, which results from overeating, and alcoholic fatty liver, which develops due to excessive alcohol consumption. Above all, alcohol consumption must absolutely be avoided. Consuming sugar and sugar-containing products, even in very small amounts, is harmful in fatty liver.

Notes for people with fatty liver:

  1. Losing weight: If the cause of fatty liver is overeating, weight loss should be the goal. Avoid foods rich in fructose and starch. These are mainly industrially processed products containing added sugar, such as sugar, lemonade, fruit yogurt, and foods containing white flour. Prefer foods such as vegetables, low-sugar fruits, fish, and lean meat. These foods contribute to achieving a negative energy balance and help you lose weight.
  2. A strict ban on alcohol: If excessive alcohol consumption is the cause of fatty liver, alcohol should be avoided at least for the duration of treatment. If the ban on alcohol is followed, fatty liver usually begins to regress within a short period of time.
  3. Regulating blood sugar: If blood sugar rises, fatty deposits in liver cells increase due to the resulting change in metabolism. It is important, particularly for diabetics, to pay attention to maintaining normal blood sugar levels.
  4. Consuming grain products rich in fiber: You should eat potatoes and plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit. Small amounts of lean meat and dairy products should also be part of the menu.

Drink a sufficient amount of fluid daily and complete the weight loss process.
