The cause of excess weight
Why do people gain weight quickly? There are many causes that need to be taken into account. However, the fundamental cause is high fat and sugar in dietary habits and not exercising regularly. If the cause of excess weight is diet and daily habits, the solution must also come through lasting changes made in this area.
Obesity emerges as a result of a prolonged energy imbalance. Its main causes are as follows:
1. Overeating
2. Lack of physical movement
3. Psychological disorders
4. Metabolic and hormonal disorders
5. Hereditary factors
6. Interference fields — in short, past illnesses
The most important of these factors is overeating. Many people do not have accurate information about the energy they take in through food and the energy they expend. For example, the sandwiches we eat daily consist of fatty foods. Sausage, fried foods, chocolate, tarts, and sauces contain large amounts of fat; we take in an average of 142 g of fat per day, and we can burn at most half of this. Some people are also unaware of the energy expended through physical movement. Overeating under the belief that "I'm exercising" can sometimes unknowingly lead to obesity.
Some experts state that obesity is hereditary. In a study conducted, while obesity was found in 8-9% of children with parents of normal weight, it was noted that the risk of obesity in children rises to 40% when one parent is obese, and to 80% when both parents are obese. However, it is believed that this stems more from the family's dietary habits than from a hereditary change.
The high energy value of home-cooked meals causes all family members to consume high-energy foods.
Sedentary people generally eat as much as active people do. In this case, the energy balance of sedentary individuals is disrupted.
The fact that obesity is very rarely seen among those doing heavy labor, while it is common among office workers with sedentary jobs and housewives, clearly demonstrates the effect of physical movement on body weight.
As a result of inactivity, muscles weaken and fat tissue takes their place. For this reason, calories freely settle into fat cells, and the size of fat cells increases 200-fold. Due to inactivity, people today expend 600-800 fewer calories — that is, one meal's worth less — than in the past, but they do not give up that one meal.
Some people may be prone to overeating to mask sorrow, distress, and insecurity. The opposite can also occur. Psychological disorders can sometimes cause overeating and sometimes undereating.
Obesity that is particularly resistant to weight-loss diets is based on hormonal and metabolic causes. This type of obesity covers a very small portion of the obesity rate in society. As is known, certain hormones affect the basal metabolic rate. A slow basal metabolism due to hormonal causes can reduce energy expenditure, causing part of the nutrients taken in to be stored. However, these individuals are also usually sedentary, and their weight gain may be related to this cause as well.
It is known that the protein, carbohydrate, and fat content of the diet is influential in weight gain. Some researchers advocate the idea that when the proportion of protein in the diet is high and the proportion of carbohydrates is low, more energy will be converted into heat and expelled. Some other researchers believe this will have no effect on the treatment of obesity. Excessively restricting carbohydrates is not correct, as it will cause disruptions in the functioning systems of organs, for example in acid-base balance.
