For the benefits of physical activity to be gained, exercise needs to be continuous and regular. For this, various forms of motivation should be provided when needed.

According to a report from the U.S. Department of Health, the following further increase the likelihood of engaging in physical activity:

• Believe that exercise is beneficial for you.

• Engage in activities that give you pleasure.

• Feel that you are doing the activities correctly and safely.

• Practice the activities regularly.

• Choose activities you can easily adapt to your daily life.

• Choose activities that won't create economic or social problems for you.

• Make sure the negative consequences of the activities (such as injury or lost time) are minimal.

When it comes to motivation, the first month is very important. If you can maintain your physical activities without interruption for one month and continue afterward, you'll have passed an important milestone. This is an important step toward making physical activity a regular, lifelong habit.

CHRONIC DISEASES ARE NOT AN OBSTACLE TO EXERCISING

Chronic — that is, ongoing — diseases are conditions that cannot be cured but can be kept under control with medication or other treatment options. Among chronic diseases are diabetes, cardiovascular conditions such as high blood pressure, and arthritis.

Traditionally, exercise has not been recommended for people with certain chronic diseases. However, research has shown that exercise can somewhat improve chronic diseases in most older people when applied during periods when the disease is under control.

Having a chronic condition like congestive heart failure doesn't mean you can't exercise. There is evidence that, when a condition like congestive heart failure is in a stable phase, endurance exercises such as walking at a moderate pace improve heart and lung function.

Diabetes is another chronic disease. Having too much sugar in the blood is harmful to the entire body. Exercise can help use up some of this excess sugar. The most common form of diabetes is related to physical inactivity. In other words, if you engage in physical activity, your likelihood of developing this type of diabetes is lower.

If you have a chronic condition, you're most likely under a doctor's care. Your doctor has likely told you about symptoms that could cause problems. If this is your situation, you should first discuss it with your doctor and, together, determine whether you can exercise or when you can begin.
