Diseases Caused by an Unhealthy Diet

Gut health should be the focus of a holistic treatment. This is because unhealthy gut flora can lead to the development of autoimmune diseases such as MS.

An unhealthy diet (the typical Western diet) leads to disruption of gut flora (dysbiosis). While the bacterium Clostridium perfringens is found in particularly high numbers in the gut flora of MS patients, Bacillus strains, which stimulate the proliferation of beneficial gut bacteria, are found in very low numbers.

Toxins that cause chronic inflammation and a permeable intestinal mucosa (leaky gut syndrome) are released by harmful gut bacteria. These toxins lead to MS activation.

In addition to a healthy diet, specific gut-friendly measures can also contribute to the development of the flora and healing of the mucosa:

  • Prebiotics such as inulin, which serve as food for beneficial gut bacteria, should be taken. Since Jerusalem artichoke contains inulin, prepare more artichoke dishes when in season. Yacon syrup/powder also has prebiotic properties and can be added to your diet.
  • Fructooligosaccharides have positive effects on gut flora. However, be careful: the gut may not be able to process fructooligosaccharides and this can cause discomfort, particularly bloating. For this reason, prebiotic consumption should always be started slowly.

DIET FOR DIGESTIVE DISORDERS

Even in the typical digestive problems of MS, a healthy diet offers the best conditions for recovery. Fiber (25 to 30 g per day) ensures regular bowel activity and movement. The diet recommended here automatically provides sufficient fiber through whole grain products, fruit, vegetables, legumes, brown rice, etc. Vegetables and fruit should generally be consumed raw.

That said, increase your fiber intake gradually, otherwise bloating may occur. In any case, remember to drink plenty of water with high-fiber foods or dietary supplements (psyllium husk powder, flaxseed, chia seeds, oat bran, coconut flour, etc.), otherwise constipation may occur.

DIET FOR BLADDER PROBLEMS

Sometimes very little fluid is taken in to avoid the constant urge to urinate. However, this makes the problem even worse, adding new complaints such as dry mucous membranes, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, and urinary tract infection.

For this reason, you should drink sufficient water, diluted vegetable juices, or herbal teas at regular intervals. Always take a bottle of water or herbal tea with you when going out. Consume liquid-rich foods such as vegetables, salad, smoothies, and soup.

Do not drink sugary carbonated beverages, coffee, or other caffeinated drinks. These can irritate the bladder.
