The Solution to Sleep Problems: Medication Doesn't Treat It, It Postpones It

Checking your phone, reading the news, writing messages, arguing, making plans... All of these send the limbic system a single message: "Alert." And when there is alert, sleep does not happen.

For sleep, darkness is not enough, silence is not enough, a bed is not enough...

Sleep requires a sense of safety. This safety is sometimes built physiologically:

Blood sugar balance, gut regulation, magnesium balance, oxygenation, breathing rhythm, vascular relaxation, nervous system regulation

And sometimes existentially:

Closing out the day, not carrying emotions forward, slowing the mind, physical touch, ritual, repetition, slowness

Because the body is convinced by rhythm far more than by words.

Slowing down at the same hour every night, being in the same light every night, taking the same breath every night, establishing the same silence every night...

These produce one message for the limbic system: "This place is safe." That is when sleep begins. For this reason, fighting insomnia is not about chasing sleep. Fighting insomnia is about teaching the body safety. And safety is built not with a pill, but  with connection.

Connection with the body, connection with time, connection with emotion, connection with life. Sleep is the nighttime form of the relationship we have with life. However we live during the day, that is how we sleep at night.

And perhaps what we need most today is this: not more sleeping pills, but more biology of safety.

To learn more in depth, you can get my book Uyuyamıyorum ("I Can't Sleep").
