Zülfü Livaneli: Our Light, Our Guide, Our Conscience Zülfü Livaneli is not merely an artist, but also a value, a philosophy of life.
Zülfü Livaneli is not merely an artist, but also a value, a philosophy of life.

He is one of the rare figures capable of embracing five generations at once with the musical works he has created, touching each of them with the same depth. He is a shared spirit that meets in the language of musical notes, transcending borders. But to define Livaneli by music alone would be an injustice to his multidimensional world.

His life is a story of struggle, of labor, and of sacrifice. Livaneli is a person who has been able to transform the hardships life has presented him, the heavy responsibilities these hardships have placed upon him, and the price he has paid, into human dignity and universal values. This transformation has left its mark not only in art, but in literature, in thought, and in life.

He first entered my life through his music. The melody in his songs and the depth in his lyrics practically enchanted me as a listener. Later, through the novels he wrote, he took root in a corner of my intellectual world. Each of his novels opened not just a story, but a door to philosophy and thought. The emotion-filled lines of "Serenade," the social critique of "Leyla's House," the deep questions of conscience in "Restlessness," and many more works bear witness to Livaneli's journey to find meaning in life.

Livaneli's cinematic works are an entirely different dimension. With that unique dance of imagery and emotion, he invites the viewer to think, to feel, and to question. But his identity as an artist is not limited to this either; in his identity as a journalist and intellectual, he has also kept his finger on the pulse of society for years, becoming a guide who not only followed the agenda but shaped it. The pieces he wrote with the responsibility of an intellectual, his guiding ideas, and his courage have been a light in the darkness.

Livaneli is far more than an artist to me. I feel fortunate to have had the privilege of getting to know him. The richness he has brought to my life is a journey that began with music, deepened with literature and thought, and found meaning through the values of humanity. He is not just my older brother figure, but also a light, a guide, and my conscience. The fact that he is also my daughter Helena Lara's beloved grandfather adds a special beauty to this story.

Dear brother Zülfü, I'm so glad you exist. I'm so glad we share this land, this world, with you. I hope you continue to spread light and love, not only to us but to the whole world, for many more years to come. Having lived in the same era as you is a privilege, a source of happiness. For those who know you in this land, life is a little more meaningful, a little more beautiful.

Thank you, Zülfü Livaneli, for presenting us with the purest form of music, literature, thought, and humanity. Having walked the same path as you beautifies our outlook on the world. May many more generations grow, think, and become more beautiful in your light…
