The Gateway to Health Runs Through the Diaphragm

A person breathes approximately 20,000 to 25,000 times a day. Because we perform this action so often, we rarely notice its effect on our lives. Yet today we know that breathing is not simply about taking in oxygen.

Breathing is one of the most fundamental biological processes affecting our nervous system, immune system, circulation, metabolism, brain, and even the pace at which we age.

One of the biggest problems facing modern people is no longer a lack of movement, but a lack of proper breathing. Most people are not even aware of it.

The Silent Epidemic: Shallow Breathing

Today, millions of people breathe shallowly, using only the upper part of their chest.

Hours spent at a computer, constant stress, poor sitting posture, physical inactivity, and chronic neck and back problems gradually reduce breathing capacity. People believe they are breathing, yet their organism is experiencing oxygen deprivation.

Over the years, this can lay the groundwork for chronic fatigue, sleep disorders, attention deficits, anxiety, hypertension, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation.

What many people today are actually experiencing is not disease, but insufficient oxygenation.

The Diaphragm: A Forgotten Organ

The diaphragm is one of the structures I emphasize in my book Regüle Yaşam Longevity. It is not merely a breathing muscle. It is a biological regulation organ located at the center of the human organism.

Positioned between the heart and the abdominal organs, this large muscle:

  • Governs respiration,
  • Supports lymphatic circulation,
  • Influences liver function,
  • Improves venous return,
  • Plays a regulatory role in the autonomic nervous system.

A well-functioning diaphragm massages the internal organs with every breath. It accelerates lymphatic circulation, helps cleanse connective tissue, and supports the removal of cellular waste. However, in modern people living under chronic stress, the diaphragm often fails to work sufficiently.

Why Is Diaphragmatic Dysfunction So Common?

Our clinical observations in recent years show that a significant proportion of patients with chronic pain, fatigue, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction have reduced diaphragmatic mobility.

The causes include:

  • Chronic stress,
  • Prolonged sitting,
  • Neck problems,
  • First rib blockages,
  • Thoracic spine dysfunctions,
  • Abdominal surgeries,
  • Old traumas.

As long as the diaphragm cannot move freely, the organism cannot breathe fully either.

The First Rib and Thoracic Blockages

One functional interference field we frequently encounter in the clinic, yet one that is often overlooked, is the first rib.

Loss of mobility in the first rib is associated with:

  • Neck pain,
  • Shoulder problems,
  • Arm numbness,
  • Reduced breathing capacity,
  • Increased sympathetic nervous system activity.

Similarly, blockages in the thoracic spine limit the movement of the rib cage. As a result, a person breathes, yet cannot use their lungs at full capacity.

Over time, this can lead to reduced oxygenation and disrupted energy metabolism.

Breathing and the Autonomic Nervous System

As I describe in detail in my book Duygusal Beyin Bağırsak II, the most important balance system in the human organism is the autonomic nervous system.

Proper breathing activates the vagus nerve. When the vagus nerve is activated:

  • Heart rhythm becomes more balanced,
  • Digestion works better,
  • Inflammation decreases,
  • Sleep quality improves,
  • The brain functions more efficiently.

In people who breathe shallowly, the sympathetic system remains constantly active. The organism begins living in a state of alarm without even realizing it.

Mitochondria Run on Oxygen

Today, one of the most important areas in aging research is mitochondria. Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of our cells.

To produce energy, they need three fundamental things: oxygen, nutrients, and healthy cellular communication.

When oxygenation is impaired, energy production decreases. A person tires more quickly. Muscle performance declines. Brain fog may appear. In the long run, the aging process can accelerate. For this reason, breathing is not merely a sign of life — it is the starting point of energy production.
